Jharsuguda: Unending cases of child abandonment have raised serious concerns over the lack of awareness among the masses about the far-fetching repercussions as one more newborn girl was found lying on the roadside near Jhandapada under Lakhanpur Tehsil of Jharsuguda district here on Thursday.

Rescued by villagers, the girl was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital. The villagers then informed police about the incident following which police reached the spot and began an investigation.

Police later registered a case in this regard and apprised the Childline officials to look after the child's well being in the hospital.

However after a preliminary investigation, police were able to identify and detain the girl's mother and found her to be unwed.

Asked, the woman, Kandhei Behera said she did not want the baby as she was not married and felt ashamed of being abhorred. " I am living with my parents. I was really afraid after delivering a child yesterday. Not left with any option, I threw her on the road," Kandhei said.

"A few villagers brought the new born to the casualty ward. She was in a state of hypothermia. She was continuously under observation of doctors and pediatricians. Some injury marks were found in her foot. Her health condition is stable now," said PK Das, the doctor.

We have asked the government officials, local police In-charge to make necessary arrangements to hand her to the ChildLine, added Das.

Though the new born's condition is reported to be stable, she will be shifted to District Headquarters Hospital for further treatment, sources said.
