Bolangir: Police on Tuesday arrested army officer Lt Col Sailendra Singh Som of Chhattisgarh on charges of misusing a red beacon in his vehicle. Two associates of Som have also been held, police said.

According to sources, Lt Col Som visited Khaprakhol area of the district in a vehicle fitted with a red beacon last night to finalise some land purchase agreements. Since the use of red beacon is not allowed in Maoist-affected areas, the arrival of the vehicle raised suspicion among the villagers.

Suspecting foul play by Red Rebels, the locals handed over all three to the police, who detained them at the police station the whole night.

Upon interrogation, Som reportedly admitted to have used red beacon in his vehicle.

“We have arrested the officer for breaching rules. He will be produced in the Patnagarh court today,” a police officer said.

Some land related documents seized from Lt Col were found to be fake, sources said.
