Nayagarh: A rape survivor allegedly killed herself by consuming poison in Nuagaon block of Nayagarh district on Monday.

“She was unable to bear the shame, disgrace and embarrassment anymore,” said brother of the deceased. “I had gone out for work and when I returned home, she was lying dead with a  bottle of poison lying beside her," he added.

The girl was allegedly raped six months back by one Debraj Barik .  Family members came to know about the incident after the girl got pregnant following which they lodged a complaint at Nuagaon police station in March. The accused was immediately arrested and is presently undergoing jail term."She had been raped by a middle-aged man and was already five months pregnant when the case was lodged,” said her brother.

Earlier in January, a minor girl in Khurda district who was allegedly raped by a youth, had committed suicide alleging police inaction . A few days before the incident, the Kunduli gang rape survivor had committed suicide by hanging herself inside her house.

It is worthwhile to mention that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while replying to a query in Odisha Assembly on Monday, had admitted that there has been a spurt in rape and gang rape incidents in State. In a written reply to a question of Opposition party Chief Whip, Tara Prasad Bahinipati; Patnaik informed the House that 1,283 minor girl rape cases were reported in 2017 as compared to 1,204 in 2016.

Besides, 92 gang rape cases were registered in 2017 in which 199 accused were arrested.

Similarly, 1,156 accused in 2016 and 1,148 accused in 2017 have been arrested in connection with the above cases. Moreover, out of the total 1,212 minor girl rape cases in 2015, 1,122 accused were arrested, data provided by the CM revealed.
