Bhubaneswar: Bollywood movie “Ranchi Diaries” released on October 13. Although the film is based on the capital city of neighboring state Jharkhand, Odia film lovers were more excited about the film because its Odia connection. Written and directed by young Odia boy Sattwik Mohanty, Ranchi Diaries, essentially a comedy,  deals with a yougster’s aims and how she lands in trouble.  Odishatv.in caught up with Sattwik in Bhubaneswar to know more about him and his Bollywood journey. Excerpts from the interview…

  • Journey so far

I was born and brought up in Bhubaneswar. I have grown up reading comic books. When I had to choose a career, I wanted to get into something creative. I did VFX and animation and started working in Mumbai. There, I came in contact with a lot of filmmakers including Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowarikar. I realized that I love storytelling and wanted to do it professionally. I consulted few friends and approached a few directors and started assisting them. I assisted Nagesh Kukunoor, Anurag Kashyap also joined Bhansali productions. In the meantime, I was writing my script as well. I got to meet Anupam Kher for the negative part in the film. He loved the story and not only agreed for the role but also showed interest to produce the film as well.

  • On Ranchi Diaries

A comedy, it is a very light-hearted film. It is not a docu drama on Ranchi or Jharkhand. It could have been on any city. After the shoot of ‘MSD, The untold Story,’ Kher Sir wanted to shoot the film in Ranchi. It depicts the story of Gudia and her friends. She is an ambitious small town girl who ends up in trouble because of her adventurous ideas. A lot of comedy of errors happen. Due to their plan of bank robbery, they end up becoming a joke of the town. It is family oriented and you won’t feel uncomfortable watching the movie with anyone.

  • Making a Bollywood film on Odisha

I would have loved to make that film Bhubaneswar Diaries also. I want to make Bhubaneswar Diaries or Cuttack Diaries or Rourkela Diaries or Puri Diaries. It will be easier for me to make a film in Odisha as I am an Odia guy. I think in Odia. I want to make a Bollywood film based in Bhubaneswar rather making an Odia film. I am always open for any kind of creativity.

  • On working in Odia film industry

If I get a chance to do something cool in Odia film industry, I would love to do that. That will be easier for me to do as well.

  • On Odias working in Bollywood

Odias are very talented and hardworking. A lot of Odia people are already there in the industry – from good cinematographers, production designers to editors. Sound engineering is majorly dominated by the people from the state. We all are there, we just need to crack when we get a good opening. Directors are also coming up from here which is really a good thing.

  • On upcoming project

Next film is in Bollywood of course. It is under process and I am still in talks with others. As soon as I finalise on any project. I will tell it to the media first.
