Berhampur: Incidents of farmer suicides continue to grip the agrarian State with a fresh case reported from Ganjam district here on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Santanu Nayak of K. Mathamukundapur, has allegedly committed suicide over loan burden. As per reports, Nayak had taken a loan of Rs 10 lakh from private sources for farming. However, due to low production and slump in prices of  vegetables, Nayak was unable to repay the loan amount.

"The yield was not good from the four acres of land on which we had grown vegetables. We were even incurring loss from the sale of vegetables due to poor market prices," said brother of the deceased Sampad Nayak to OTV.

Disappointing at his failure to repay the debt, Nayak allegedly consumed pesticide on Saturday. In critical condition, he was rushed to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur where he breathed his last on May 1.

Meanwhile, neither the district administration nor the police has so far commented on Nayak's death.

Earlier, one T Bulu Reddy of Chikarada village under Rangeilunda block in the district had allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide on March 11.
