Bhubaneswar: Poor people unable to afford food in the city here can now avail free quality food with  the installation of a community refrigerator, a first of its kind initiative in Odisha named ‘Annapurna’ aimed to feed hungry from the surplus donated by people to the noble cause.

Two voluntary organisations Bhubaneswar Queens Ladies Corner and Bhubaneswar Nights Table in a joint collaboration have tied up with a city based restaurant, Michael's Kitchen to supply free food to hungry people near Sainik School.

“Food quality will be inspected first by professionals and then it will be provided to the fridge where it will be stored for the needy. People who are not able to afford food can take it from the fridge,” member of Bhubaneswar Knights Round Table Jitu Satpathy said.

“People can send their surplus food on occasions such as after holding a birthday or marriage party. Local restaurants can also donate unsold food instead throwing it,” he said.

Bhubaneswar North MLA Priyadarshi Mishra inaugurated the first community fridge. The organisers plan to install more fridges at different places like Patia, Saheed Nagar, Old Town and Bhubaneswar Railway Station to help the poor.
