Bhubaneswar: Air India, the national carrier, is all set to begin direct bi-weekly international flight service between Bhubaneswar and Bangkok from today.

The maiden flight from Bangkok with 18 passengers on board arrived at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar at 7 am amid a traditional ceremonial water salute. The return flight is scheduled to leave the city airport at 3.45 pm today.

According to the airline schedule, new flight service will be available on every Thursday and Sunday. While the flight from Bangkok to Bhubaneswar will take off from Bangkok at 5:40 am and reach Bhubaneswar by 7am, the return flight will take-off from Bhubaneswar airport at 3:45 pm and reach Bangkok by 8:15 pm.

Though  the Bhubaneswar airport got international tag on October 31, 2010, the first direct International flight of AirAsia to Kuala Lumpur was launched for the first time on April 26 earlier this year.

Presently, AirAsia and Air India are two major airlines offering domestic and international flights from the Biju Patnaik International Airport.

Meanwhile, in view of the increasing footfall, the airport authorities have opened two foreign exchange counters at the international and domestic terminals.

The State government is optimistic about new opportunities with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik asserting that the introduction of new flights is a big move to bolster Odisha’s position as new gateway to the East. Moreover, the international flight operations will boost tourism, trade & ties with South East Asian countries, he said on Wednesday.
