Bhubaneswar: The long-awaited day is finally here. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad will formally inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Bhubaneswar on February 26.

This was informed by director of the premier medical institute Ashok Mohapatra.

“Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has given his consent to inaugurate the institute on February 26. Besides, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will also grace the occasion,” Mohapatra said adding preparations for the day are nearing completion.

The official stated though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was earlier scheduled to dedicate the health institute to public, it was changed at the end moment.

Built over an area of 1,25,000 square metre, the healthcare facility, boasts of three operation theatres, a recovery ward, four high dependant units, a 10-bed ICU along with 150 beds spanning different specialities.

The OTs are being touted to be the most modern in the State with state-of-the-art anaesthesia machine, operation tables, lighting and other equipment. Sources said, around 10 surgeries would be conducted on an average every day.

In June last, the hospital had started the OPD services in the basic disciplines of medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, dentistry and gynaecology. The number of disciplines has however increased to 24 in a later stage.

The hospital is one among the few medical institutions in the country to have a speciality sleep clinic.

Other speciality clinics in this institute to be opened are high-risk pregnancy, paediatric nephro-urology, head and neck oncology, lung cancer, infertility, hydrocephalus-spina bifida and cerebral palsy clinics. Not far from now, AIIMS will have 39 super-speciality clinics.
