After the implementation of the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission, this incentive for the lakhs of employees is seen as a step towards motivating a large number of Railway employees, particularly those involved in execution and operations of railways, to improve their productivity and ensure safety, speed and service for Railway customers.

The financial implication of payment of 78 days' PLB to railway employees has been estimated to be Rs 2,245.45 crores. The wage calculation ceiling prescribed for payment of PLB is Rs 7,000 per month. The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs 17,951 for 78 days.

The Railway Unions had earlier in July called for a nationwide indefinite strike in support of several long-pending demands, including review of the new pension scheme and 7th Pay Commission recommendations.

They had also alleged apathy of the Central government towards their demands. So, the approval of the PLB will at least bring a smile to lakhs of families ahead of the festive season.
