Bhubaneswar: The commissionerate police today arrested a person who had allegedly beaten a man to death and seriously injured another person in the IRC Village area under Nayapalli police limits late on Saturday night.

The arrested accused has been identified as Simanchal Jena of Ganapati Nagar slum in Nayapalli area.

Talking to media persons, DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said the accused had previous enmity with Basant Pradhan and Lambodara of Ganapati Nagar slum and was looking for an opportunity to eliminate them.

Police was able to identify the accused after thoroughly examining the footage from the CCTV, which was installed in a house near the area where the incident took place, he added.

The two victims were walking on the road when Simanchal came from behind and suddenly attacked them with a lathi. Stung by the blow on his head, Basant fell down on the side of a road while Lambodara fell on the middle of the road. Not satisfied, Simanchal dealt two more blows on the head of Basant and one more blow on the head of Lambodara before fleeing the area.

While Basant died on the spot, Lamodara was rushed to the Capital Hospital from where he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. His condition is stated to be critical.
