Umerkote: Large number of Aadhaar cards, bank passbooks and ATM cards were found abandoned under a bridge near Bokata village under Umerkote block of Nabarangpur district on Thursday.

Initially locals spotted the documents lying under the bridge and informed the police following which an investigation was initiated.

The villagers demanded a probe into the matter while holding the local postmaster responsible for the misplacement of Aadhaar cards, bank passbooks and ATM cards sent by post to them.

Umerkote block chairman Laiban Bhakta alleged, “Earlier villagers did not get their NREGS money because of the postmaster’s negligence and lodged police complaints as well.”

Birendra Kumar Senapati, Umerkote police officer, informed, “The cops recovered 72 bank passbooks, six Aadhaar cards and some ATM cards from the spot and all of them are backdated documents.”

He further stated, “As some Aadhaar cards are still active, process will begin to call cardholders to the police station so that they can collect their document. Besides, the postal department will be asked to lodge complaints with the police so that action will be taken against those responsible for the laxity.”

Refuting the charges Shankar Biswas, Bokata postmaster, said, “Usually some villagers collect letters or documents from me on behalf of their neighbours and there is a likelihood that they might have lost it. Or maybe done some mischief by throwing the documents off the bridge.”
