Puri: A 74-year-old woman, who was summoned to Nimapara police station in Puri district to resolve a family dispute with her daughter- in-law, was allegedly beaten up by a cop after being detained for nearly two hours.

The incident came to light after the woman identified as Basanti Palata of Dhirapur Dalai Sahi lodged a complaint with the district SP alleging that Inspector In-Charge (IIC) of the police station Mrutyunjay Swain beat her up with a lathi.

As per reports, Basanti’s daughter-in-law Rita Barik had turned up at the police station alleging torture by her in-laws. Acting on the complaint, the cops summoned Basanti and her son to the police station for a compromise.

However, discussion between both the parties proved futile. Basanti alleged that she and her son were detained at the police station till late night during which the IIC held her responsible for the dispute and started thrashing her with a lathi.

Sources said Basanti's younger son Ajay had married Rita in 2015 and the couple used to have frequent quarrels. Rita, who is currently staying with her parents, lodged a police complaint alleging torture by her in-laws, including her husband.

On the other hand, the IIC refuted the allegation levelled by Basanti and termed it as false.

"She was not allowing her daughter-in-law to stay in the house. Since I forced Basanti to accept her daughter-in-law back, she has levelled such allegations against me," said Swain.
