Bolangir: The Town Police today detained six persons for allegedly thrashing an auto-rickshaw driver who succumbed to his injuries at Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital (VIMSAR) in Burla late on Wednesday night.

Informing the media today, IIC of Town Police Station Prashant Patnaik said the deceased, identified as Chaitanya Suna was on the way to his house on his auto-rickshaw last night when three youths on an Apache bike hit his auto-rickshaw near FCI Godown on Station Road. Following the incident, altercation ensued between Chaitanya and the three youths. In the meanwhile, one of the youths called up his friends over phone. Following information, his friends rushed to the spot and severely thrashed the auto driver. The youths later fled the area.

The locals later rushed Chaitanya to the district headquarters hospital. But as his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to VIMSAR at Burla where he succumbed to his injuries in the late night.

Tension ran high in the town after the body of the auto-rickshaw driver arrived from Burla this evening. The family members of the deceased and the members of the Auto-rickshaw Association staged a road blockade on the Station Road near FCI Godown demanding compensation to the family of the deceased and arrest of the prime accused.

“Apart from the six accused who are detained by the police, we demand immediate arrest of Jadumani Tandi, the prime accused in this case. I request the district administration to immediately provide financial assistance to the family of the deceased from the District Red Cross Fund. I also request the state government through the district administration to provide financial assistance to the wife and two children of the deceased for their livelihood,” Lalit Nayak, president of Bolangir Auto-rickshaw Association, told media persons.

He also said the Association has given four days to the police to arrest the prime accused failing which the Association would come to the street again and the district administration would be responsible for the consequence.

Asked about the action taken by the police so far, the IIC said following complaint by the family members of the deceased, police today raided several places in the town and detained six persons. “Efforts are on to nab the prime accused,” he added.
