Puri: In a shocking incident, a four-year-old boy died after he was killed by a pack of stray dogs in the backyard of his house at Jagannath Colony area here today.

Narrating the heartrending incident, Kajala Rout, the grief-stricken mother, said she was cooking when her son said he wants to fly a kite. “As I refused him, he told me to switch on the TV. But as I was straining the gruel from the rice, I told him to go his aunt’s house and watch the TV. After finishing my work, I went outside the house to see where my son is. But as I did not find him in his aunt’s house, I desperately searched the area and found my son lying in the backyard of my house and some stray dogs feasting on him”.

Kaincha Swain, aunt of the deceased boy, said she ran out of her house after hearing the cry of her sister and found about 4-6 dogs pouncing on her nephew with two of them biting on his head, one on his neck and another on his leg. “Seeing us, the killer dogs fled the area. We rushed the boy to the district headquarters hospital where the doctors pronounced him as brought dead,” she said.

Talking to media persons, Lalatendu Mishra, a local, said the Municipal authorities have turned a blind eye to these stray dogs whose number has gone up substantially. Due to their apathy, such tragic incident took place today.

Asked about the matter, councillor Jayant Sarangi said the Municipal authorities will start operations in all 32 wards very soon.  “All stray male dogs will be caught and castrated,” he added.
