Nayagarh: The Higher Education department has asked the authorities of the Divine Residential College here to immediately rusticate three students for brutally ragging their roommate.

Sources said the Regional Director, Higher Education, has asked the college authorities to submit a detailed report on the incident by tomorrow.

The directive of the department came after a complaint was filed by the father of the victim in Nayagarh Town Police Station today.

Acting on the complaint, police has detained the three students and started interrogating them.

The victim, Nihar Ranjan Patnaik, is now undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital with injury marks all over his body.

In his complaint lodged with the police, Himanshu Bhusan Patnaik, father of the victim, said he had admitted his son in Plus Two Science in the Divine Residential College in June this year. After his admission, his son was staying in the college hostel.

“From day one of his stay in the hostel, my son was subjected to intense ragging by his three roommates. They used to thrash and kick him, make him do sit-ups, scratch his thigh with hard combs, bite body parts, punch his face and attack him with glass bottles. My son was used to bearing the brutal torture as the three students had warned him of dire consequences if he brings the matter to the notice of the college authorities. By the grace of God, I came to know about the plight of my son from other sources and informed the matter to the college authorities yesterday. But they requested me hush up the matter with a promise that they would take care of his son henceforth. But I refused to comply with their request and lodged a complaint with the police today,” said the father in a chocked voice.

“I have heard that ragging usually takes place in big colleges, universities and technical institutes. But now I realise that this heinous practice also prevails in private colleges like this one,” he pointed out.

Narrating his ordeal to m media persons, the victim said his three roommates—Himanshu Sekhar Pradhan, Subha Swagatam Nayak and Nityananda Pal—used to torment him every day.

“These three students started torturing me regularly after the Raja festival. They would forcibly take the key of my suitcase and eat all dry foods. If I resisted, they would severely beat me up. They also asked me to do sit-ups. If I expressed reluctance, they would make me lie down on the floor and kick me. On several occasions, the three roommates beat me up with a wooden shaft or glass bottles and bit my shoulder. At times they would also brand my body with mosquito repellent coil. They also beat me up because I secured more marks in the examination,” he said.

Asked about the matter, chairman of the college Kamalakanta Sahu said the college management is ready to lend all support to the victim student. “I have assured the victim’s father to bear all medical expenses towards his treatment and promised him to take stringent action against the three students,” he added.

Sahu also said m apprehending that the three students might make another attempt on the victim, college authorities had sent them m home last night and called up their parents and guardians to the college and kept them as guarantors.

“Police has received the complaint from the father and conducted medical examination of the victim. Police has detained three students and begun their interrogation. The investigation is on and action would be taken against the three juveniles,” Nayagarh SDPO Jayaram Satpathy told media persons.
