Keonjhar: As the first conviction following the enactment of Odisha Prevention of Witch-hunting Act, 3 persons were been awarded life sentence for a double murder and gang rape over witchcraft suspension in Kolhahundula under Joda police limits in Keonjhar. The verdict was pronounced by the Keonjhar District and Sessions court. Two other were acquitted by the court over lack of evidence against them.

Notably, November 30, 2014, a couple was murdered over suspicion of practicing witchcraft and their minor daughter was gang raped.

The 3 accused have been awarded life term for murder, 2 years for attempt to murder, 20 years for gang rape, and 7 years as per the Odisha Prevention of Witch-hunting Act.

“The special district judge of Keonjhar took all the evidence into account against the 3 accused and awarded the punishment,” said Crime Branch lawyer, Ashwini Patnaik.
