Jajpur: Two persons were killed and another was critically injured when boulders fell on them during alleged illegal quarrying at Jabara Hill in Jajpur district today.

The mishap took place at Jabara village within Jenapur police station limits when work was on at the hill to extract black stone conducting blasting and using wagon drilling, the police said.

Jajpur district collector Ranjan Kumar Das who visited the site, attributed the incident due to illegal and unauthorised quarry operation.

"We have retrieved one of the bodies while efforts are on to recover the other body, which is under a huge boulder.

We have requisitioned a crane to help in retrieving the body," he said.

The collector said the seriously injured has been admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Although Jabara Hill has been leased out for black stone quarrying, the lessee has not been accorded Consent To Operation (CTO) for exploration due to lack of some formalities. Some people were illegally extracting black stones after conducting illegal and unauthorised blasting, Das said.
