Balasore: Two labourers were killed and five others, including a woman got critical due to an electric shock while installing street lights on premises of Chandipur Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) here in Balasore on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on the DRDO's Military Engineer Services (MES) premises when the labourers were digging the ground for installation of street lights.

During the process, the drilling machine came in contact with the under-wiring system of MES following which the labourers got an electric shock.

While two of them died on the spot, rest five were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

“Nine of us were drilling holes for installation of street lights. The drilling machine came in contact with electric wire and we got electric shock,” said a labourer.

“The victims are temporary labourers of MES. During the installation of street lights, they were not aware of the 11KV wire under the ground. The driller machine came in contact with the wire and the labourers got electric shock. The injured have undergone a preliminary treatment here and are under observation,” said Rashmirekha Pradhan, Balasore Tehsildar.
