Malkangiri: Barely two weeks after the surrender of 94 Maoist sympathisers, another 145 Maoist sympathisers including 33 women surrendered before the police in Malkangiri district today.

Talking to media persons here, Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said of the 145 people who surrendered before the police, 82 are from Kuruba village and 63 from Marigata village of which 33 are the militia.

“All of them were working for Kalimela Dalam,” he said, adding  these Maoist sympathisers have said they decided to surrender as the Red Rebels have deviated from the Mao ideology and are indulged in the brutal torture of innocent tribals.

He also said the police will take lenient view of the cases registered against those who have surrendered. “Besides, efforts will be made to rehabilitate them under the surrender rehabilitation policy of the state government,” the SP informed.

Notably, 94 Maoist sympathisers including three women had surrendered before the police in the district on November 8.

Of the 94 Maoist sympathisers of Sudhakonda and Rajalkonda villages of Kalimela block, 25 were Maoist militia and 6 were village committee members.

Going by the spree of surrender, it now seems that the Maoist activities in the district is on a gradual decline especially after the fierce encounter in Panasput area in the cut-off area of Chitrakonda block in the wee hours on October 24 in which 27 Maoists were killed during a joint operation by the Odisha Police and the Grey Hound of Andhra Pradesh police.
