Puri: A helper of a bus was killed while 20 other passengers were injured after the vehicle overturned near Liakhia bridge in Puri district on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Dilip Behera.
The mishap occurred when the bus was on its way to Kakatpur from Puri.
"Carelessness on part of the driver is to be blamed for the mishap as he failed to spot a cow crossing the road. In a bid to save the animal, he steered the bus in a hurry after which the vehicle skidded off the road and overturned," said Prakash, an eye witness.
According to reports, there were 30 passengers in the bus which was packed to its capacity and was also carrying extra luggage on its deck.
"It appears to be a case of rash and negligent driving. We have registered a case and further investigation in this connection is on," said officer-in-charge of Ramchandi police station, Pramod Sahu.
Sahu further informed that the local police had reached the spot within 10 minutes of the mishap. All the injured were then immediately rushed to the nearest hospital in 108 ambulance.
