Keonjhar: A youth was injured while trying to drive a wild elephant herd back into the forest in Champua.

According to reports, a herd of 22 elephants from Bardhan forest range had strayed near a human settlement and caused massive damage to crops in the area yesterday.

Fearing further damage, the locals including few farmers had launched an operation to drive back the herd. However, Managovida Mahanta, a local youth, was injured in the attack by an elephant of the herd during the drive.

Managovinda is now undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital and his condition is said to be stable.

Meanwhile, the farmers of the region have demanded adequate measures by forest department to drive back the jumbos as they fear loss of standing crops in their agricultural fields.
