Body of undertrial prisoner found hanging in Puri Jail

Puri: The body of an undertrial prisoner was found hanging at the Puri District Jail today. As per police sources, the deceased identified as Sheikh Akbar Mehmood of Saradhapur in Khurda district allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside the toilet.

"After having lunch, Mehmood went to the toilet where he hung himself with a towel from a railing," said Sarat Mishra, SDPO, Nimapara.

The SDPO added that the body will be sent for post mortem tomorrow.

According to the police, Mehmood was lodged at the jail following his arrest on charges of having illicit relationship with a minor girl. After the incident, no comments could be obtained from the family members of the deceased.
