Black money use rampant during elections; Rs 3800 cr cash seized: SIT

Cuttack: The Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money, which held a meeting in Cuttack on Tuesday, informed that use of black money was rampant during elections and there needs to be a change in law to curb such economic offence.

The meeting was chaired by vice-chairman of SIT, Justice Arijit Pasayat at his residence in Cuttack.

“Use of black money was rampant during the general elections & Rs 3800 crore cash was seized. There is a need to make changes in law to curb the offence,” said Pasayat after the meeting.

Moreover, the SIT will be submitting its seventh interim report on black money within a couple of months, Pasayat informed.

Several senior officials of the Income Tax Department, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Vigilance Department, Crime Branch, Enforcement Directorate (ED) and police were present in the meeting.

Sources said discussions were held on how the black money menace can be checked and measures required for bringing back black money from abroad. This apart, the attendees reviewed the probe into the chit fund scam and discussed strategies to maintain multi-agency coordination.

This was the eighth meeting of the SIT on black money to be held in Odisha.
