BJP laments CM’s silence on ‘trafficking’ of Sundergarh girl

Bhubaneswar: Targeting the Odisha government over the kidnapping and trafficking of a 16-year-old girl from Sundergarh, who was recently rescued from Rajasthan, BJP Mahila Morcha president Prabhati Parida today demanded an answer from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

“We want an answer from the Chief Minister on why women are not safe in Odisha. The DCW’s letter on the lapses of police in Sundergarh girl case has proven that there is delay in delivering justice to women,” Parida said.

“Why Odisha police failed to locate the girl over one year when the DCW managed to do so in two days,” she added.

Mentioning about the letter written by DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal to Odisha CM, Parida said father of the girl appealed the police officials and district administration, but the pleas only fell on deaf ears.

Claiming that 1,465 kidnap cases were registered in the State last year, she sought CM’s intervention for investigation into the cases.

Meanwhile, comments from BJD could not be obtained on the matter.

Alleging involvement of some Odisha Police personnel in the kidnapping and trafficking of the minor girl, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal had demanded action against erring officials and traffickers in a letter written to Odisha CM.

“Due to the alleged negligence and connivance of the police, the girl and her father have undergone immeasurable suffering and the girl is deeply traumatised,” the letter read.

Maliwal sought CM Naveen’s intervention in the matter and urged him to ensure that the alleged traffickers and police officials involved are immediately arrested. She also asked the Chief Minister to make arrangements for the rehabilitation, protection and welfare of the girl.

On February 5, the DCW, along with Rajasthan Police, rescued the girl from Jhunjhunu. She was allegedly kidnapped and trafficked from Rourkela in Odisha in 2017.

According to a DCW official, the girl was kidnapped, sold and forced into a marriage with a 40-year-old man, who had been raping her over the past one year.
