Bhubaneswar: Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) today confirmed bird flu strain in the samples which it had sent to Bhopal for laboratory tests.

As per reports, some chickens were recently found dead inside the OUAT farm following which blood samples of the dead chickens were sent to Bhopal for testing.

"We received the lab report from Bhopal today and it tested positive. The State government has already been informed about the same," said the concerned OUAT department head, Sushen Panda adding that chicken culling operations will begin from tomorrow.

After confirmation of the Avian Influenza in OUAT poultry farm, the area within 1 km radius of the infected site of OUAT poultry farm has been declared as the ‘infected zone’ while the area within 1 to 10 km radius of the infected site has been declared as the Surveillance Zone.

All the poultry birds within 1 km radius of the infected site will be culled and disposed of by deep burial method. To carry out the culling operation and surveillance measures, 12 Rapid Response Teams (RRT) have been reportedly formed of which seven teams will be engaged in the culling operation within 1 km radius of the infected site.

Besides, the movement of poultry birds and poultry products to and from the infected zone (within 1 km radius of the infected site) has been prohibited as a measure of control and containment of the disease.

Moreover, restocking of poultry birds within 1 km radius of the infected site will reportedly commence after 90 days of issuance of sanitization certificate by the government.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has said that payment of compensation for forced culling of poultry birds, destruction of eggs and poultry feed to control contamination of the Avian Influenza will be made as per the revised rate of the concerned department of the Government of India.
