Bhubaneswar: Take cognizance of the detection of bird flu, the authorities of Nandankanan Zoo on Monday decided to shut the ‘walk through aviary’ inside the zoological park as a precautionary measure.

As per the decision, the walk through aviary will remain out of bounds for the visitors from tomorrow, until further orders.

At present there are 77 species of birds in the zoo. The walk through aviary is home to nearly seven species of birds and as there is close contact between the birds and humans, the authorities have decided to shut the walk through aviary from tomorrow.

The move comes after H5N1 avian influenza virus was found in the bird samples sent from Odisha University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) to Bhopal for tests.

Senior government officials informed that the Poultry Breeding and Research Farm, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, OUAT is the epicentre of H5N1 AI virus.
