Bhubaneswar: Binapani Mohanty, who has already left a mark in the field of literature, will be honoured with the prestigious Atibadi Jagannath Das Samman, announced Odisha Sahitya Akademi on Monday.

Apart from Mohanty, 15 other litterateurs- Minaketan Purohit, Gaurachandra Panda, Padmanabh Sahu, Indulata Mohanty, Bibhuti Bhusan Patnaik, Sailendra Mohapatra, Niranjan Padhi, Srikanta Patra, Kabibar Parida, Trinath Nayak, Manindra Mohanty, Rabi Mohapatra, Sarat Chandra Kar, Baja Das and Akhilanand Bibarta will also be felicitated by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi.

Atibadi Jagannath Das Samman is an honour conferred to eminent litterateurs for their lifetime contribution to Odia literature.

“It is a great moment for me. All the executive members of Odisha Sahitya Akademi visited my place and congratulated me. It is the greatest award and I thank all my readers,” said Binapani Mohanty, who received Padma Shri in 2020.

Binapani Mohanty’s career began with the publication of ‘Gotie Ratira Kahani’ in 1960. Some of her best known stories are Pata Dei, Khela Ghara, Naiku Rasta, Bastraharana, Andhakarara, Kasturi Murga O Sabuja Aranya and Michhi Michhika.

Mohanty received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1990 for her collection of short stories entitled 'Pata Dei and other stories.'

Besides, many of Mohanty’s short stories have been translated to other Indian languages. She has also translated a large number of books from Hindi and English. Mohanty had earlier received the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for her short story anthology Pata Dei.

The Atibadi Jagannath Das Samman is instituted after 15th century Odia poet Jagannath Das who was also known as Atibadi (greatest). In 1993, Odia poet Radha Mohan Gadnayak was the first recipient of the prestigious award.
