Bhubaneswar: Showing exemplary bravery and courage, a middle-aged woman today fought off two miscreants trying to snatch a gold chain from her in broad daylight in the capital city today. She was successful in nabbing one of the miscreants.

According to sources, the woman identified as Abhijita Mahapatra of Malaya Vihar in Mancheswar was going to pick up her daughter from school when two bike-borne miscreants pounced on to loot her valuables near GGP Colony in Rasulgarh.

As per the woman, one of the miscreants pushed her to the ground and tried to snatch a gold chain from her neck. However, the woman did not panic and retaliated. Amid the tussle, while one of the miscreants fled the spot on his bike, the woman caught hold of the other while raising an alarm. Later, locals rushed to the spot and took control of the chain snatcher before handing him over to police.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate Police has felicitated Abhijita for showing exemplary courage. She was presented with a cash award of Rs 5000 and a citation from the Twin City Police.

Police have lodged a complaint in this regard and initiated a probe to catch the other robber.

Asked about the bravery award, Abhijita said, “It is a matter of great pride for me and I am happy.”

Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty said Abhijita could inspire many women and girls to defend themselves in times of danger.
