Bhubaneswar: In a bid to provide smart address to the residents in Capital city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated processing for digitisation of houses, a survey for which has already been commenced.

Under the initiative, the city residents will be provided with a special house number called Digital Door Number (DDN) which could ease in searching of address on internet, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation informed through its Twitter handle on Monday.

"This GIS-based technology shall allot unique Alpha-numeric numbers for all buildings of the city that will allow BMC to determine the exact location of residential  and commercial buildings," the BMC tweeted.

Earlier, lane number, land mark, plot number, postal index number (PIN) among other details were required to mention in the details of one's address. But, the new system will replace the erstwhile house numbering spatial solution.  As per the fresh rule, the address will contain only area code, house number and street number.

The civic body authorities will provide a barcode-based smart address card through which one can find the address of certain people, house or property by just scanning code or entering the unique ID number in to the Google. It will also help emergency services improve their delivery and response time.

The survey has been kicked off on a trial basis in Ward no 6, 23 and 26 in the city. As many as 100 youths have been pressed into services for the digital door numbering (DDN). They will make door to door visit and speak to the house owners before providing them with a special house number.

The BMC has aimed at collecting more revenue from the city residents as the new system will be able to check tax evasion due to digitisation of address.

Over 60 houses have been included in the new system on the day-1 of the survey yesterday. More houses will be covered in a phased manner, sources said.

The civic body has aimed to connect all the houses in the Capital city to the new system by March 31.

The BMC had signed a MoU with a Hyderabad-based company--Navayuga Solution- for the digitisation initiative. However, the rollout of the plan was delayed in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.
