Bhubaneswar: Commuters in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will soon enjoy the comfort of travelling in noise-free and modern electric buses (e-buses) as the much-awaited e-bus project kicked off in the capital city on a trial basis.

According to sources, as many as 50 e-buses would be inducted to the existing fleet of Mo Bus to give push to clean mobility in public transport system.

In the first phase, two e-buses have reached the city and the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) carried out the demo run of the buses on different routes of the capital city. On Saturday, the e-bus made trial operation from Master Canteen square to Khurda, sources said.

CRUT has already begun the bidding process while for now two firms have been selected for trail run of these e-buses. The firms will conduct demo run of the buses for next 10 days, after which other bidders would be asked to conduct trial run on city routes in a phased manner.

The e-buses have many modern facilities like air conditioner (AC), modern music system and CCTV cameras to facilitate passengers with a safe and comfortable ride. What's more interesting is there are USB charging points installed in every seat.

The bus is noise-free and will run without diesel or petrol. Once charged, it will run for around 200 km. The drivers of the buses won't have to shift gears as it will run automatically with three switches such as reverse, neutral and drive. It has also auto door-locking system.

Notably, 50 e-buses have been sectioned for Bhubaneswar by the Department of Heavy Industry under FAME India scheme phase II to give a push to clean mobility in public transportation.
