Bhubaneswar: In a dramatic twist to the broad daylight murder of a person and subsequent public lynching bid on the two accused, police commissioner of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Sudhansu Sarangi clarified that the murder was an act of counter-attack for self defence.

Earlier in the day, a person named Tukuna was killed by two brothers, Sudhir and Sagar in a moving vehicle near IRC village in Nayapalli area here in the city. But later CP Sarangi while addressing a presser today said that the accused duo executed the act while trying to save themselves from the attack of Tukuna who was a in fact an accused in multiple cases, Police Commissioner Sudhansu Sarangi said.

The deceased Tukuna was on bail recently with two criminal cases pending against him, Sarangi added.

The Police Commissioner informed that Tukuna had a brawl with the accused Sudhir and Sagar. The duo had shoved him in a pick-up vehicle to bring him to the police station. On the way, Tukuna had attacked the brothers with a knife which he had kept inside the vehicle. In the fight, one of the brothers sustained injuries following which both overpowered him and stabbed him multiple times with the same knife in a bid to protect themselves, the Commissioner said.

Local noticed the crime and intercepted the vehicle before attacking two brothers. On getting information, PCR van reached the spot and rescued Tukuna before shifting him to the hospital. Later, he succumbed to injuries, the Police Commissioner said.

CP Sarangi further informed that police have registered three separate cases in this connection.

The first case involves attack on Sudhir and Sagar by Tukuna while second case is related to the murder. Similarly, another case involving locals attacking two brothers has been registered, Sarangi said.

Police have obtained CCTV footage and are examining them to ascertain what exactly happened inside the vehicle.

The knife used in the crime has been seized and sent to forensic laboratory for examination. Body of Tukuna has also been sent for post-mortem, police said.
