Berhampur: Two persons were arrested and cash worth over Rs 33 lakh was seized by the Berhampur police during a raid on an illegal IPL betting syndicate early on Friday.

"On the basis of reliable information regarding IPL betting, a team led by Berhampur SP carried out raids and arrested two persons identified as R Lalie Achary and K Prasant Kumar Subudhi. Rs 33.61 lakh cash, four cellphones and three ATM cards were seized from their possession," Southern Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Satyabrata Bhoi said at a press briefing.

"During the interrogation, the accused persons revealed the involvement of several others in the racket. We are tracking them and will arrest them soon," Bhoi added.

Speaking about the modus operandi, Bhoi said, “It was a well-oiled network spread across the country and abroad. The racket was operating through websites and apps and there was no physical involvement in it.”

“Our efforts will be to make Berhampur completely free from betting activities because many gullible youngsters are getting attracted to it and losing money,” he added.
