Ganjam: Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) on Tuesday suspended an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a constable of Golanthara Police Station in connection with the custodial death of a man inside the PS premises last evening.

According to reports, ASI PC Acharya and constable DP Jena of the police station have been suspended for negligence in their duties. IIC of the police station has also been transferred. Gopalpur IIC Bibekananda Mahanta has been posted as the new in-charge at Golanthara Police Station.

The development comes following the visit of the Southern Range DIGP and Berhampur SP to the police station for a preliminary investigation into the incident.

According to police sources, a special team under the supervision of Additional SP has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

“A case has been registered and probe is on to ascertain the exact reason of death of the accused in police custody, said Berhampur SP, Pinak Mishra.

“We are investigating the matter thoroughly according to the NHRC guidelines. After the preliminary enquiry, actions have been taken against few erring officials. Whoever found in negligence of his duty will be punished according to the provision in law,” said Mishra.

It is worth mentioning that a youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to death inside Golanthara Police Station yesterday.

The accused, identified as Ganesha Dakua, was brought to the police station for questioning in connection with a brawl at his village in Rangipura under Golanthara police limits. However, he was found hanging with his belt in the evening. His body was recovered from the women and children’s cell in the police station premises.
