Bhubaneswar: A district court in Odisha on Thursday convicted a man in the sensational Banchan Sudha Patnaik murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Khordha district and sessions judge found Dipti Ranjan Patnaik guilty of murdering Banchan Sudha (53), wife of businessman Manu Charan Patnaik in Rasulgarh area of Bhubaneswar in September 2013.

Dipti Ranjan, who was employed as a security guard at the house of Bachan Sudha, had stabbed her to death when she was alone at her home at Sabarsahi area in Rasulgarh.

Mancheswar police had submitted the chargesheet in the case on January 7, 2014. On the basis of the chargesheet, the court framed charges against the accused under Sections 302, 454 and 394.

The court pronounced the verdict in the seven years old murder case after examining 18 witnesses and circumstantial evidence. While the court handed down life imprisonment to the convict and imposed Rs 5,000 fine under Section 302, another sentence of three years and Rs 2,000 fine was announced under Sections 454 and 394. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the court said.

The court clarified that non-payment of the penalty will invite additional imprisonment.
