Nayagarh: Police is on the lookout for an auto-rickshaw driver, who looted cash and ornaments from a woman and her daughter of Mahulia village after offering them spiked drinks on Saturday.

Talking to media persons, Kumuda Rout said his mother Kumudini Rout and grandmother Aseli Pradhan were on the way to his sister’s house at Odagan on Saturday morning to attend the nirbandha of his niece a day before her marriage.

“After hiring an auto from our village, they reached Petapalli Chhak. While they were waiting for the bus to Odagan, an auto-rickshaw came from Sharankul and asked them about their destination. He took them in his auto-rickshaw. On the way to Odagan, the driver stopped the vehicle at Canal Chhak near Nandighar and offered them cold drinks by adding sedatives. As the duo became unconscious, he took them to Krushnaprasad under Ranpur and dumped my mother near a school. Later, he took my grandmother to Rajsunakhala hospital and fled the area after leaving her on the varandah of the hospital,” he added.

He further informed that the auto driver looted cash from his grandmother and mother and the ornaments they were wearing, after they became unconscious.

“After I came to know that they have not reached Odagan till evening, I went to Odagan and lodged an FIR at the Odagan police station. At about 10 PM, we got the news about the loot and rescued both of them. After a preliminary treatment at Ranpur hospital, we brought them to Nayagarh and admitted them in the district headquarters hospital. I am fortunate that the miscreant has not killed my mother and grandmother,” Rout said.

Talking about the condition of the duo, he said his mother has regained her conscious while his grandmother is still lying unconscious.

Asked about the incident, Nayagarh SP Manoranjan Mohanty said the incident is the first of its kind in Nayagarh district.

“I have information that some auto drivers of the district, who were arrested by the police and have been released from the jail recently, have committed the crime. Police is keeping a close watch on these criminals. We hope to nab them very soon,” he added.
