Bolangir: The Childline and local police have reportedly foiled an attempt to sell off a baby girl in Bolangir district on Sunday.

As per sources, one Sarojini Mahakud from Fapasi village under Saintala Police limits of the district was allegedly trying to sell her baby girl to one Balamati Suna of the same village when a joint team of Childline officials and local police apprehended the duo.

Subsequently, the officials rescued the baby girl and handed her over to the Child Welfare Committee.

Balamati, who was accused of buying the baby, cited poverty as the reason for Sarojini to part with her baby girl. However, the mother of the baby brushed aside allegation of selling her baby.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Bolangir Child Welfare Committee, Jogeswar Mohanty has said that they are waiting for the police report after which they can decide the future course of action.

“After reaching the spot, we found the accused handing over her baby to Balamati. Though she is denying the charges, we can give further information after a detailed police investigation report is out,” added Jogeswar.
