Bhubaneswar: Pradeep Sethi, the prime accused in the multi-crore Artha Tatwa chit fund scam, attempted to commit suicide again in Jharpada jail in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

Sethi, who has been lodged in the high-security prison since May, 2013 following his arrest, tried to strangulate himself with an electric wire of an inverter inside a toilet of the jail.

According to jail authorities, Sethi had a quarrel with a peon of the prison following which he attempted to commit suicide inside the toilet. The jail authorities broke open the door and rescued him. Subsequently, he was shifted to Cuttack SCB for treatment.

“Sethi has some psychiatric problem. He had gone to the welfare section of the jail for some work at around 11 am yesterday where he had an argument with a peon. Later, he removed an electric wire from an inverter and attempted to kill himself inside the toilet,” Jharpada Jail Superintendent Subhakant Mishra said.

“He has been sent for treatment and all the staffs have been asked to keep special vigil in his ward. Steps will be taken for the follow up treatment as per the advice of the doctor,” he added.

It may be mentioned that Sethi had made such attempts to take his own life on two occasions earlier. In July, 2016, Sethi tried to end his life by cutting his wrist with a sharp object.
