Puri: Intensifying the ongoing anti-extortion drive, Police here have sent a stern message to all criminals by arresting seven persons including a minor boy on charges of demanding extortion from a person and murderously attacking him.

Based on a complaint filed by one Prabhakar Mohapatra, the Baselisahi Police in Puri registered a case under sections 341/386/324/307/34 of the IPC and initiated an investigation.

On Wednesday, Police informed that seven persons have been arrested forwarded to JMFC, Puri in this connection and all of them have been identified as residents of Gokhasahi under Baseli police limits. These include Mahabir Behera (20) alias Sanju, Ugrasen Behera (22), Ajaya Behera (24), Patita Behera (21), Gula Behera (22), Debana Behera (24). Another Akhari Behera alias Sibuna, aged 14 years, has also been apprehended and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board in Puri.

As per the complaint, in the evening of December 18, Mohapatra received information regarding admission of his son at the Puri district headquarters hospital and when he rushed he found him in a serious condition.

It is alleged that his son along with two of his friends was returning to his house that evening when on the way near Gokhasahi, the accused persons demanded extortion (dadabati). However, when Mohapatra's son refused to give them money, the accused allegedly attacked him with a knife injuring him grievously. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.

Following multiple raids, Baselisahi Police was able to apprehend the accused and after a thorough interrogation, it is claimed that they confessed to have committed the offence. Based on prima facie evidence, all the accused were arrested and forwarded to court.
