Bhubaneswar: A woman allegedly tried to commit suicide near the Odisha Assembly few hours after the House assembled for the Budget session of the State legislature, on Thursday.

As per preliminary reports, the woman, who hails from Kujang block of Jagatsinghpur district, allegedly attempted to end her life by pouring kerosene on herself near Jayadev Bhawan auditorium, in the vicinity of the State Assembly.

Though the exact reason behind the woman’s immolation bid is still unclear, she was overpowered and rescued by a team of police personnel who whisked her away from the spot and took her to an undisclosed location.

This is the second suicide attempt played out near the State Assembly in the past 24 hours.
On Wednesday evening, security personnel had foiled another suicide bid near the high-security zone which has been covered under a three-tier security blanket for the Budget session.

High-drama unfolded when a man, reported to be a resident of Hanspal area in Bhubaneswar, tried to set himself on fire with some inflammable liquid.

Alert police personnel deployed at the spot foiled the suicide bid of the man after overpowering him and seizing the combustible liquid from his possession. The man alleged that the Mancheswar Police was not acting on his complaint despite several pleas.

Later in the day, Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said that three persons have been arrested for the suicide bids near Odisha Assembly in the past two days.

"We suspect that some people are instigating such incidents. We will conduct a detailed probe to ascertain the role of people who brought them near the State Assembly, recorded the act and other aspects," said Dash.
