Cuttack: A friend in need is a friend indeed. The saying couldn’t be more apt in the case of mentally deranged Srijit Padhi, who was found begging at the Grand Road near Puri Jagannath Temple and was rescued by his college friends a week back and admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Though he hasn’t recovered fully, but his friends and classmates that include the likes of the current Twin City Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi and other high-ranking government officials have ensured that he gets the best treatment and recovers as soon as possible. Thanks to Srijit’s friends, he is reportedly on the speedy path to recovery and would take a week or two to get discharged from the hospital.

One of his friends, Govind Chandra Das said, “He has improved a lot. He is taking his meals himself and he could even recognise us. I pray before Lord Jagannath to heal him as soon as possible.”

Srijit isn’t illiterate, as many would think; rather he used to be a scholar in his heydays at Ravenshaw. He got his Master’s Degree in Economics from Ravenshaw University and tried to get into Odisha civil services. Given a scholar he was, he reportedly cleared the civil services examination twice, but to his utter dismay, got rejected in the personal interview round both of the times. And that turned out to be the ultimate blow to his highly ambitious mind leaving him distressed and mentally ill.

Since his admission in the Psychiatric department of SCBMCH last week, he has come a long way from being violent and deranged to now a soft and mellow person.

Professor Sharda Prasanna Swain, the doctor treating Srijit was quite optimistic of his recovery. He said, “He is being treated through injections and oral pills. I think in a week or two he won’t be needing injections and only a few medicines will suffice.”

None of his family members have tried to contact Srijit yet. Hospital authorities said that if nobody will take his responsibility after discharge, he will be taken into a rehabilitation centre.
