8 minors among 15 migrant labourers rescued from brick kiln in Visakhapatnam

Bhubaneswar: A total of 15 migrant labourers including seven minor girls and one minor boy of Nabarangpur district were rescued by police and the District labour Officer from a brick kiln in Vishakhapatnam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

As per reports, one of the minor girls had informed her brother over phone about being physically and mentally tortured by the brick kiln owner. Based on the complaint received, a joint team of the Nabarangpur police and District Labour Office raided the brick kiln late last night and rescued all the migrant labourers.

“Along with the district labour officer, the police team went to Vishakhapatnam and raided the place late last night. A total of 15 migrant labourers have been rescued,” said Himanshu Behera, IIC of Dabugaon police station.

Reportedly, 15 labourers from Pariabedha village under Dabugaon police limits had gone to Andhra Pradesh to work at the brick kiln. However, they were not paid wages on time. Instead, they were subjected to physical and mental torture, sources said.

District labour officer, Narendra Goipoei said, “Some of them were found to be minors. We will ensure proper education is provided to them.”
