Aska: In a major crackdown, Aska police in Ganjam district on Sunday arrested eight criminals and seized huge cache of arms and ammunition from their possession.

Cops from Dharakote, Badagada and Aska police stations police station launched a special operation and seized 10 pistols, 53 rounds of ammunition, 12 crude bombs and other sharp-edged weapons from the accused.

All the eight accused had past criminal antecedents and were involved several cases including extortion, robbery and other crimes.

“Two special teams were formed to carry out the special drive to nab the criminals. We are taking special measures to put a check on incidents of crime like extortion and illegal sand mining in the district,” said Additional SP, Bijay Mallick.

According to Mallick, the special drive against criminals and other anti-social elements will be intensified in coming days.

In another incident, Purusottampur Police in Ganjam district successfully cracked a sensitive burglary case and recovered 6.501 kilograms of stolen gold ornaments worth of Rs 3.5 Crore.

Besides, cash amounting to Rs 4, 44,500, mobile phone and other house breaking equipment have been recovered from the possession of 15 persons who have been arrested in connection with the incident.
