Puri: Ahead of the Diwali, ‘Give With Dignity’, an initiative of Puri-based organisations has provided essential commodities to 400 poor households in the pilgrim town for free.

Many such private organisations join hands for the initiative every year to help poor families and the destitute. This year they have distributed essential ration like rice, pulses, salt, sugar and semolina.

However, Covid-19 adds an exception to this programme, as the ‘Give With Dignity’ also handed out masks, sanitizer and created an awareness about the consequences of the deadly pandemic. Apart from this, the members distributed earthen lamps to spread the message of ‘vocal for local’ in the society.

Like every year, Lord Jagannath’s chief Badagrahi servitor Jagannath Swain Mohapatra took part in this charity event and distributed ration to the poor. Mohapatra said, “This Covid pandemic has made the vulnerable more vulnerable. Most of the daily wage workers are jobless now. We should help them in this crucial hour.”

“We donate essentials foods every year, but this year we are doing this event with a bigger purpose. In this Diwali, poor people cannot even afford a lamp due to the situation arising out of the pandemic. We will hold this charity for the whole month,” Swain Mohapatra added.
