Rourkela: Barely four days after the 18th convocation of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, which was attended by President Ram Nath Kovind, three students of the institute have tested positive for coronavirus.

Sundergarh Collector Nikhil Pavan Kalyan said the infected students have been kept in isolation and steps are being taken to ensure that the virus does not spread further on the NIT campus.

“Students, who attended the recent convocation ceremony, had come from across the country. There was no corona case but three students have now tested positive. They are under home isolation and we will ensure that all students are tested,” Kalyan said.

“As of now, there is cluster of cases in the district and we will ensure that the spread is minimised. We have increased the testing by 10 times from yesterday and hence, expecting some more cases. Our major focus is contact tracing and keeping positive persons in isolation so that cluster outbreak is prevented,” the Collector added.

Sundergarh has been registering over 20 cases for the last three days. Today, it has reported 27 positive cases. At present, the district has 143 active cases.

As far as the Covid-19 cases in Odisha are concerned, the State reported 214 fresh cases on Thursday- the highest single-day spike in the last two months. Of the total positive cases, 126 were from quarantine centres while the remaining 88 were local transmission.
