2 Killed, 4 Injured As Khap Panchayat Turns A Battlefield In Odisha

Malkangiri: As many as two people were killed while four others sustained injuries after a clash broke out during a 'khap panchayat' at MPV 33 village under Kalimela block of the district on Tuesday night.

According to sources, a Khap panchayat was held in the village to take a final call on the future of Bidhan Mirda, a married person of the village, who was accused of having an illicit affair.

During the meeting, Bidhan was reportedly held guilty for his illegitimate relationship however, enraged upon the ruling, he charged towards the gathering and attacked Biswajit, his wife and some other seated at the spot. In the attack, Biswajit and his wife died on the spot while four others sustained grievous injuries.

After the incident, when Bidhan tried to flee the spot, the villagers took him into custody and thrashed him and his wife.

Informed, police reached the spot and controlled the situation. All the injured were rushed to Kalimela Hospital for treatment, however, Bidhan and three others were transferred to Koraput Medical College and Hospital as their condition was critical.

Meanwhile, the local administration has deployed police force to prevent any further untoward incident.
