Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Thursday claimed to have busted two bike lifting gangs and arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in stealing of motorcycles.

The Nayapalli Police has also recovered 46 motorbikes and seven mobile phones from their possession. The stolen bikes bear registration numbers of Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and several other places of the State.

One of the two gangs used to steal bikes from several places of the state and supply it to Jankia area of Khordha district from where these stolen two-wheelers were engaged in illegal stone quarries, said police sources.

The other gang used to steal sports bike which could be used in snatching and other criminal activities, added sources.

"Nayapalli Police Station Inspector In-Charge (IIC) Sarad Sahoo and his team under the supervision of ACP Anil Mishra were collecting inputs against bike lifting gangs and busted the racket today. Many of the vehicles were reportedly stolen from Mancheswar, Chandrasekharpur, Saheed Nagar and other areas of Bhubaneswar. While the owners of some bikes have been identified, the verification of others are underway," informed Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash.

Police are also interrogating the members of the gangs to elicit more information from them. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Earlier on November 3, the Badambadi Police in Cuttack busted a motorcycle lifting racket and arrested five of its members. Police had also recovered 22 bikes which were lifted by the criminal gang from different parts of the city.
