Bhubaneswar: The RTOs across the State have suspended 16,820 driving licences during the months of January and February for violating road safety guiltiness, the State Transport Authority (STA) said on Saturday.

While 7960 DLs were suspended in January, a total of 8860 DLs were suspended in February, the STA informed.

During the two months, the highest number of 11,613 DLs were suspended for not wearing helmet by rider or pillion followed by 1922 DLs due to overspeeding, 1322 for using mobile phones, 387 for over-loading , 316 for drunken driving, 313 for carrying passengers in goods vehicle and 282 for red light jumping.

The DLs have been suspended for a period of three months as per the directions of Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety for violations like over speeding, drunken driving, red light jumping, using mobile phone while driving, over load, carrying passengers in goods vehicle, not wearing helmet by rider or pillion.

The government has made it mandatory for both rider and pillion to use helmet from January 1. RTO Bhubaneswar 1 has suspended 3016 DLs, closely followed by RTO Cuttack with 3003 DL suspensions and RTO Rourkela with 1483 suspensions during January and February.

In order to reduce deaths due road accidents, the drive against road safety violations will be further intensified jointly by RTOs and Police, the RTO added.
