Balasore: As many as 15 people have been taken ill, 11 of them critically, after taking tea allegedly laced with pesticide in Balasore district of Odisha today.

The incident occurred at Ranasinghapur village in Bhogarai block of Balasore district when all of them complained of uneasiness after drinking tea while preparing food for a marriage feast.

Soon they were rushed to Saradhapur Primary Health Centre (PHC). As their condition deteriorated, the affected persons were shifted to Jaleswarpur Community Health Centre (CHC).

The doctors attending the affected persons claimed that a pesticide-like compound was mixed with the tea consumed by them.

“The people mistakenly put Phoradox (one type of pesticide) instead of tea dust while preparing the beverage,” said medical officer in-charge of Jaleswarpur CHC, Dr Kamalakanta Jena.

“Preliminary treatment has been given to all the affected persons. The condition of 11 persons remained critical while four others are stated to be stable now. If needed, they will be referred to Balasore district headquarters hospital,” he added.
