Keonjhar: The district police on Wednesday rewarded 11 Good Samaritans who helped road accident victims reach hospital in time. Keonjhar SP Jai Narayan Pankaj felicitated the awardees with cash prize of Rs 2,000 and an appreciation plaque each during the Independence Day celebrations.
"I was the only one around when the road accident took place in Ambadadi village. I am happy that I wasted no time and immediately called up the ambulance which helped saving the victims,” said Sabita Baradi, one of the awardees."
Rahul Choudhury, another recipient said, "Although I had called the ambulance, it was getting delayed and so I hired an auto-rickshaw to take the victims to hospital. Their lives were saved. It is a wonderful feeling to have received the award today.”
Earlier, in April this year, the Keonjhar police had announced Rs 2,000 cash award for helping road mishap victims. The decision was taken after as many as 627 accident cases were reported in past one year. A total of 344 persons have lost their lives due to road accidents in the district.

"Usually people turn indifferent towards accident victims to avoid getting involved in unnecessary procedures at hospitals and police stations. The move is aimed to encourage people for helping road mishap victims. We hope this encourages more people to lend a hand to accident victims and save lives," said the SP.
