11 Detained For Illegal Sand Mining In Cuttack

Cuttack: Commissionerate Police on Sunday conducted raids at sand ghat along Mahanadi River near Paika Sahi in Gopalpur area of Cuttack district and detained 11 persons for their alleged involvement in illegal sand lifting from the region.

As many as seven tractors engaged in the sand smuggling were also reportedly seized by the cops from the ghat.

Acting on complaints about the illegal sand lifting from the ghat, the Special Squad of Twin City Commissionerate conducted raids today and detained the 11 persons. The identities of the detained persons are yet to be revealed by the police.

"My vehicle was engaged in a nearby brick kiln for the past 15 days. In order to earn some extra money, my driver might have agreed to lift sand from the site. I was not aware of it," said Rajendra Kumar Swain, one of the detained persons and owner of a tractor.
